Anthimose of Iveria

An important addition to the National Library is the “Greek-Romanian Gospel” by Anthimose of Iveria, a Georgian cleric, writer, publisher, and educator who lived in Romania and was declared a saint by the Romanian Orthodox Church, was a printing entrepreneur. Without his publications, such as the 1693 printing of the Gospel in Greek and Romanian, the history of the printed book would be unimaginable.

The first Georgian printing house in Tbilisi was formerly founded by Vakhtang VI with assistance from Anthimose of Iveria. His accomplishment is that he printed the first Georgian publications on paper from Europe. For this reason, Anthimose dispatched Mikhail Istvanovich, whose name is even printed on the books of Vakhtang’s printing company, to Georgia.

One of the most significant publications among the National Library of the Parliament of Georgia’s acquisitions is the “Greek-Romanian Gospel” printed in Romania by Anthimose Iverieli. It has been added to the National Library’s rare editions fund.
